Constructed in 2393, Starbase Archangel is one of the most distant Stations operated by the Federation, taking no less than 8 months at Warp 9.95 to reach from Sector 001. Located along the Beta-Gamma Quadrant border, it acts as the Command Base for Deep Space Exploration around the area, and is also a frontline combat station in the war against the Dominion-Reptillian Alliance. 'Archangel' is the main hub of the Tlumach Fleet Yards with both external and internal docking/repair/construction facilities capable of housing Federation, Klingon and even Romulan starships should the need occur.
Tlumach Fleet Yards represents an enormous leap in the friendship between the Federation and the Klingon Empire since the end of a brief war during 2390, although it is not as great a milestone as the ill-fated Unity One station was. The fleet yards, since 2395, have been the home of the most distant Klingon station, Outpost Gorkon, which although it is dwarfed by the Immense Class Archangel station, provides a somewhat home-away-from-homw feeling towards the Federation's Klingon allies. Klingon Officers docked at the Yards can choose to enjoy the more luxurious and comfortable Archangel station, or, as many do, stay aboard 'Gorkon'.
Due to the sheer distance from Federation territory, and the tactical value of it, the Tlumach Fleet Yards makes use of a number of automated defence platforms and garrisoned starships. The Federation also have protected trade routes with several developed species, where the natives provide supplies, materials and other vital items in exchange for protection against the Dominion-Reptillian Alliance.
